Estadão: cover photo for Flávio, nothing for Lula’s rally

On September 8, Estadão splashed Flávio’s rally on Paulista as its main photo, with “28,500, according to USP”[1]. On October 12, the front page carried no photo, headline or teaser about the previous day’s pro-Lula rally[2]. Otherwise, the papers’ record is mixed.

The contrast

A photo, then nothing

The day after Flávio’s rally, Estadão led with the attacks on Moraes on Independence Day. The main photo showed Paulista and said “28,500, according to USP”[1]. On October 12, the lead story was something else, and the front page had no photo, headline or teaser about the pro-Lula rally[2].

The tally

It wasn’t always like this

The record is mixed. In September 2025, the rallies against the amnesty made the lead headline in Folha and O Globo[7][9]. In March 2026, O Globo called the demonstration with Flávio “thinly attended”[12]. When the campaign opened, all three papers split the front page between the two candidates[13][14][15].

The count

No drone, just “thousands”

On October 11, the USP monitor did not count the crowd. According to Metrópoles, the GSI, the government’s own security office, stopped its drone from flying over Paulista[19]. Without that figure, Folha wrote “thousands” and cited rallies in 76 more cities[20].

The fact-checks

Who checked the rumors

g1 Fato ou Fake checked three rumors about the October 11 rally and rated all of them #FAKE[22][23][24]. The campaign rumors against Lula were checked by other outlets: “closing churches” was checked by Bereia[25], the gangs claim by Aos Fatos[26] and “father of tigrinho” by Lupa[27].

In g1 Fato ou Fake’s listings, we found no fact-check of any of these rumors up to October 14[28]. Flávio’s remark about the CNBB, the Brazilian bishops’ conference, got only the CNBB’s own reply[29]. Before you vote, look at the front page and find out who checked.
